Our NexGen team was tasked with developing new materials and manufacturing methods to reduce the costs of laptop and tablet housings. Fuse was the result of that research. By adapting existing production methods from the athletic shoe industry we were able to reduce the carcass costs of a traditional notebook by 60% and a tablet by 30%.
Our strategy focused on dramatically reducing tooling costs, labor and finishing; the three most costly aspects of manufacturing. By adopting the laser cut and pressure/mold/seal process, we eliminated dozens of parts and all finishing processes like painting, polishing or in-mold decoration.
